One More Thing...

Please, please, PLEASE go here to sign a card that Al Gore will deliver to Congress on Wednesday next week, when he testifies about Global Climate Change.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled blog....

Edited to fix the link. NOW, you can go sign it!

The Sky is Falling, the Sky is Falling!

I don't want to take this blog in the direction of constantly ranting about what we are doing to our planet and all, but I just read a really important blog post that I had to share. I can't read that and not put in one more plug for everyone to do what we need to do to save our planet, for our children and grandchildren. I do want this blog to focus on my children, our unschooling lives and the joy of life, and I will work to do that. However, I also feel called to speak about what we are doing to save the planet, as a family. Every so often I will share some of the things we are doing. A lot of it is actually part of our unschooling, as we feel showing our children about these things is very important, and involving them in the solutions even more so. I'm not going to go into anything right now, but I do want to urge you to look at the blog and read some of her other posts. Part of me wants to think that she has it all blown out of proportion, but just in case she is right, and because it is the right thing to do, no matter what, I am working to make changes in our life, to simplify, to conserve energy, become more self sufficient, and to spread the word.

Oh, how I wish I was actually like Chicken Little, where this really is just a natural cycle of the Earth's climate and not the end of the world as we know it.

Green Eggs and Ham

This is a picture of A reading a Dr. Seuss book to E. Such a simple, common, everyday thing, but, oh, so much more. My mother's heart is bursting with pride for my daughter. A has finally gotten to the pick up a book and read the whole thing by herself stage of reading and I could not be happier. I am such a bibliophile, I could not imagine having a child who did not think sitting with a good book was the best choice for what to do with yourself. Looks like I will have at least one. And now that A is taking an interest in reading books, E is all into wanting to learn to read. Not that she is really ready, but you never know.

The picture was taken yesterday afternoon. This morning A got up half an hour earlier than the rest of us and was found reading another book when we got up. Later in the day she was attempting to teach her sister how to read and met with the same frustration I had with her when she was four and wanting to read! I reminded her that it won't do any good. E will read when she is ready.

Maybe A will be ready to read Harry Potter 7 by the time it is released. Wouldn't that be cool?

Day Four

Last Friday we received, in the mail from American Science & Surplus, a kit to grow some Triops. Triops?, you say. Yes, Triops.
So we set up the tank and poured in the tiny, tiny eggs and waited for our little shrimp-like friends to hatch. By the next day when it was time to feed them for the first time, they had finally hatched and we could just barely see them swimming around like crazy, drunken mermaids.
They are supposed to grow very fast, often doubling size in a days time. That seems to be the pace ours are sticking to, but it is hard to tell right now, as they are so small. Tomorrow, day five, we can feed them several times in the day, so growth should accelerate from now on out. The best thing about these "pets" is that they only live for 20-90 days, changing all the while, to keep it interesting. I don't know if you remember my luck with fish and tadpoles, but I am not so good with the water dwelling creatures. Keeping them alive, that is.
Anyway, the girls are enjoying checking on their triops each day and watching them grow. We read that they will sometimes eat each other when resources are scarce. Could be exciting around here in a few days or weeks!
All that and we had a great discussion about greek and latin root words the other day, all from the Triops being named for their three eyes. I love unschooling!

Is it Hot in Here?

When I was a teenager, I loved to read books like Stephen King's The Stand, which describes a post-apocalyptic world with most people dying out from an epidemic, and the ensuing struggle for survival. I loved to see human ingenuity solving the problems at hand and I imagined what I would do in such a situation. I was also drawn to the Amish way of life, stripped down to the bare essentials, but retaining what is important. I often thought about what such a simple, hard working, self-sufficient life would be like.

It seems I might get to experience aspects of both these worlds in my lifetime. Please read this.

What are you doing to stop Global Warming? What do you know about Peak Oil?

It is time to get our heads out of the sand.

The Plea For Creativity

Found this at the Natural Child Project. This is a video from the TED conference with Sir Ken Robinson speaking about creativity and how our schools are killing it in our children. The ability to think outside the box is crucial to the future of our existence as we know it on this planet. If we can't come up with new and better ideas for how to live in harmony with our planet we will be in serious hot water (no pun intended). Anyway, excellent talk here, just wanted to save it here on my blog, and share it with you all, of course. Enjoy.

Gorgeous Games

I wanted to share a couple links to some games that the girls have been playing lately, because they are so beautiful, whimsical and fun! The first site, Orisinal , has a large selection of games that are geared toward the younger crowd, but have a universal appeal as well. Plus the art is delightful! I love the one where the bunny bounces on bells up into the starry night.

The other link is to a game called Sprout. It is on a site where you can find many games of all types. We have just begun exploring it. Let us know if you find anything good! Anyway, this game is so clever and the graphics so refreshing, I just love it! Be patient and you will figure it out. Enjoy!
