Tool of the Oracle: Your True Nature

Meme found at Frank's blog.

Instructions:
1. Delve into your blog archive.
2. Find your 23rd post.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.

"The adults just jumped right in and invited the kids along for the ride."

Sounds like unschooling to me! And a great way to live life. Oh wait, unschooling IS a great way to live life.

Photo Meme

Saw this on Sandra Dodd's blog. Go to the sixth folder in your pictures on your computer and pick the sixth picture. Here is mine:

This is from our house hunting trip out to Las Vegas in June of 2003. A was 4 and E was 2 and we stayed in the Luxor Casino. Picture was taken with my first digital camera with a whopping 2.1 mega pixels, so clicking on it doesn't help much. But you can take my word for it, the kiddos were pretty darn cute! Especially E, with her toy horse that she carried around everywhere.

Where I Am From

My mother would have been sixty years old on the 14th. This is for her.

I am from all things on sale, even if you don't need them, Clorox bleach and Hellmans Mayo.

I am from a 150 year old farmhouse, aka The Homestead, aka Shangri La, where hot summer days were spent reading in a hammock on the big blue porch or floating in an innertube on the blue, blue pond.

I am from red begonias grown gorgeous in "just dirt", marigolds in the garden and wildflowers in the vase.

I am from apple cider making parties, Kern moles and Demarest moles, from Pom Pom, Great Gorgeous Aunt Gerry, and the Ice Queen.

I am from humor that covers and heals all and melancholy that runs underneath.

From "life is not fair" and "there is no such thing as a free lunch".

I am from believing in fairies as much as God, Bible stories and philosophical discussions du jour.

I am from Adirondack mountains and lakes, family archives in towns with our name, and stories of being descended from Scottish Queens.

I am from chopped egg sandwiches, and chocolate chip cookies after the first day of school, always.

I am from brothers who drive Nana's car into the bushes, guitar serenades each night before bed, and boxes of hand-me-down clothing from Lisa, Kimmy and Carol.

I am from garage sale treasure trunks full of Christmas ornaments and artwork, boxes of slides taken with a camera with my name, and, always, always, doing it for the memories.

Template, here.

Raspberries, Memes, and Imminent Disaster Averted

E loves raspberries. Oh, boy, does she love raspberries. So, this morning I was making her favorite raspberry sauce that she puts on everything from pancakes to ice cream. As the berries and sugar were cooking on the stove, I wandered over to check my email. There was a comment on this blog from Pat tagging me for a meme. So, of course, I had to go read all about it and totally forgot about the sauce on the stove.

Sixth sense kicked in and I bolted to the kitchen to find the stovetop covered with red raspberry sauce, the burner off, but no smell of gas. I must have walked, ok ran, in just as the flame went out. As I was salvaging raspberry sauce and cleaning up the bloodbath on my stove and floor, I thought about the meme I was tagged for.

Here's the scoop:

The Six-Words Meme was originally started by Smith Magazine.
Legend has it that Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words. His response? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Last year, SMITH Magazine re-ignited the recountre by asking our readers for their own six-word memoirs. They sent in short life stories in droves, from the bittersweet (“Cursed with cancer, blessed with friends”) and poignant (“I still make coffee for two”) to the inspirational (“Business school? Bah! Pop music? Hurrah”) and hilarious (“I like big butts, can’t lie”).
Here are the rules:
1) Write your own six word memoir.
2) Post it on your blog and include a visual illustration if you’d like.
3) Link to the person that tagged you in your post, and to the original post if possible so we can track it as it travels across the blogosphere.
4) Tag at least five more blogs with links.
5) Don’t forget to leave a comment on the tagged blogs with an invitation to play.
6) Have fun.

In light of today's events, my six word memoir:

Never check email while making sauce.

I"ll tag you all later!

The Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Me Meme

Eight things about me. You know the drill. I was tagged by Zamozo. I'm not tagging this time, but if your blog is on my blogroll, consider yourself The Chosen One, or 8, as the case may be. Let me know you chose yourself in the comments so I can go read all about you, since we're sharing and all.

1. I am phone phobic. Really. Call me and I will talk for hours. I won't call you back. I can't. Really. Freaks me out. Sometimes I can get over myself and pick up the phone -calling my dad today is a good example - but for some reason, making a phone call is not one of my strong suits. So. For anyone out there who would think I would call once in a while....sorry, I wish I could. Call ME. Please. Pretty please.

2. I have lived in 23 different houses/apartments/dorms in my 35 years.

3. I can't decide if I want another child. On one hand, I have two beautiful girls and I am totally content with two. On the other hand, a boy would be nice. On the other hand, I get sick thinking about the overpopulation of the world. On the other hand, I would love to give birth again to show my daughters how it's done now that they are old enough to remember. On the other hand, these two are out of diapers and weaned and have been for years and years. I'm running out of hands and no amount of "not not trying" has made up my mind for me these last three years. Time to give up? Or time to bring in the big guns?

4. I have used the same razor for almost 20 years. When I was in high school, I bought one of the razors that has replaceable blades. Since it has never broken and I can still buy the blades, why should I get a new one?

5. I miss my family. Really, really miss my father and step mom and brothers - and their wives and kids, too- and my mother. My mother is dead, so not much I can do about that. But the rest of them... See #1. They are as bad with the phone as I am and we don't get to be together very much due to our far flung abodes.

6. I hate to back track. I will spend a long time with a map finding the most direct route anywhere. I can understand when a road has to be built to go around a lake or a mountain, but why don't all the roads across the wide flat desert connect? Why can't I just drive straight to where I am going? Seriously...

7. I cannot handle disappointment. Expectations are the death of me, I swear. I could be the happiest person in the world if I could learn to accept life as it IS. My dreams are often not pursued, for fear of it not working out as I expect. Mine is a untested faith.

8. I sewed my own wedding dress. It for was for the wedding to another guy that I did not end up marrying. Good thing C was not afraid of commitment because I started our relationship with my wedding dress all ready to go! It took me two days to make, except for the hem. I hate doing hems, so I kept putting it off until I had a nightmare about walking down the aisle trying to finish the hem, dropping the needle, tearing the fabric, with everyone in the church whispering behind their hands. Got right up and finished that hem, by god!

Bonus picture of me, Sept 1996, in that very dress:

Now, chose yourself The Chosen One, er, Eight, and share the love!

I'm Not Weird, AM I?

Ha! Yes I am, too, weird. Aren't we all? Look around the unschooling blogosphere lately and you'll find many a blogger revealing their weirdness to all who care to read. Yep, another one of those blog memes, infecting us all with it's quasi virus-like ability. Seems I've "caught" it from Chris at Zamozo and now I will do my duty and divulge six weird things about me. When done with that I am to "infect" six more bloggers by leaving them a comment asking them to share the weirdness. Long live the weird meme!

1. I like to eat ice tea mix. I make a paste and drink lots of water as I eat it, thereby effectively ingesting a glass of ice tea. At least that is what I tell myself...

2. I like to play with silly putty. I used to make a putty from glue to play with, but they changed the formula, so it does not work like it used to. I read somewhere that needing to keep your hands busy is actually a form of oral fixation. If my hands are not busy, I tend to nibble on something. I blame my mother's sudden weaning of me at four months of age.

3. When I eat a candy bar, I eat each part separately. For example, a Snickers would get it's chocolate eaten off first, then the nougat, then the peanuts in the caramel, finishing with the caramel. It takes me a comparatively long time to do this, as you might imagine. Another piece of the oral fixation puzzle, I guess. And, no, I do not smoke.

4. I can write backwards, in cursive. Backwards and upside down, too. In much nicer handwriting then my regular writing, in fact. I used to write notes to my boyfriends like this, so no one would be able to read it while I was writng it (in class, of course!). You have to hold it backwards up to the light or a mirror to read it.

5. I cannot throw away or otherwise get rid of a book. Even if it should be burned (the What to Expect books come to mind...)! My library shelves are full of every book I have ever owned and since I read voraciously, I am fast running out of shelf space! I do like to loan out my books and don't fret if I don't get them back.

6. My husband and I really, truely, enjoy each other and I really, really, enjoy my girls. I would rather hang out with my family, just BEing together, than do anything else in the world. Pretty sad that most of the country would think that weird, huh?

OK, I am spreading the love to Flo, Stephanie, Sissi, Sandra, Annette, and heymom.
